Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

This past weekend, I attended an auction that combined a number of estates. I wasn't on the lookout for anything in particular, but I ended up with some stuff that I'm pretty happy about.

miscellaneous glasswares
Mish-mash of random glassware and other housewares.

It was actually a pretty sad auction. Most people attending were just there with cars, so big items were going for ridiculously low prices. A double pedestal Duncan Phyfe dining table, worth retail around $4,000...sold for a piddly $150.

We also only had a car, otherwise I'd be all over that. Seriously.

My favourite purchase of the day were these chairs.

wood chairs with arms

While they need to be recovered, and there is a small amount of damage, it's nothing that I can't work with.

Wanna know how much I paid?

$5.

Not each.

Total.

That's $1.25 a chair.

So excited! Unfortunately, Mike isn't nearly as excited as I am, so they won't be making an appearance around the kitchen table. They will be split up around the house. One will most definitely be my cloffice chair!

Have you ever found an outrageous deal at an auction?

Update: See a finished chair here!

  1. I haven't been to an auction, but I go to the furniture markets once a month here in Kansas city, and I love estate sales.

I think your chairs are great! And I guess I'm lucky that in our house, Ryan leaves all decor choices to me and at least pretends to love everything I choose.

  2. Hi Ashley,
I've never had such a great deal as you did with those chairs - fantastic! I'm sure you will find your hinges as well. They will probably be caked with old paint though. As for your window work - well done! Not fun work, but essential. My first window was not nearly as good as yours. You might try using an exacto knife to remove the excess and even out the surface. It works for me, just a suggestion.

  3. Hi Starr,

I've noticed that if I just DO things, without trying to get input, I can get away with a lot more! ;) Sometimes he's right, though, and my taste is a little too bold and I'll be sick of it in a year or two.

Anyes, great suggestion about using an exacto knife! I didn't even think of that but it makes so much more sense than the butter knife that I was using. As for hinges...layers of paint don't scare me, fortunately. All of our second floor doors have Blake Suffolk latches that were just covered...I have an extra crock pot that we don't use for food - I cooked them with water and baking soda and the paint came off very easily.

  4. What a great deal on those chairs! You make me want to get out and go to an auction! I surely would have had a hard time passing up the table for that price, what a steal. And all that glassware..it looks like you even got a piece of blue pyrex in the back there if I'm not mistaken. Lucky you!

  5. I DID get some Pyrex! I'm a newbie collector, and essentially buy any piece I see that's a decent price.

  6. Where do you find these auctions/estate sales? I live in Barrie and would love to go to one...just haven't looked for any yet.

  7. Hi Stephanie,

there are usually lots in the summer in the surrounding areas of Barrie. I'm on the e-mail list for two of the companies that most often run them around here - http://www.theauctionadvertiser.com/GPifher/ and http://www.kevinbarkerauctions.com/

I personally prefer Kevin Barker auctions based on how they're run.
